Broad-leaf Cattail Scientific Name: Tyhpa latifolia
Distinguishing Characteristics:
•Large plant growing 4 to 10 feet tall.
•Leaf blades 1/2 to 1 inches wide growing in clusters.
•Inflorescence: female flower spike (seedhead) is tightly packed and in the shape of a cigar; seedhead is rusty red-brown at maturity; male flower spike sits just above and is touching the female spike. The male and female spikes of T. angustifolia are seperated.
•Growing along margins and may grow out to 2 feet of water. Plant lays dormant in winter, turning brown and can completely ring the shoreline of a pond in a few years if not controlled.
